Maintaining A Positive Mindset Through Training

In training, as in life, progress is rarely linear. It’s easy to focus on individual workouts, but true growth comes from visualizing the big picture. Each session is just one piece of the puzzle, important, yes, but not the entire story.

When I first started competing, I totaled 1425lbs in 2013. Fast forward to hitting a 2000lb total in 2017, and the journey between those two milestones had been anything but smooth. I battled knee pain, brachialis tendinitis, and most recently in this past year alone, I underwent two major surgeries, one for a full pec tear and another for a hernia. These setbacks could have been roadblocks, but instead, they became lessons.

Bad days are inevitable. You’ll have sessions where the weights feel heavier, the motivation isn’t there, or the progress seems invisible. It’s in those moments that your mindset makes all the difference. You can dwell on what went wrong, or you can focus on what lies ahead and use the tough days as fuel to refine your discipline and resilience. Having an experienced coach who you can fall back on who has experienced and overcame similar obstacles can help to guide you through those challenges and setbacks and help keep your mind at ease.

Visualize where you want to be months or years down the line, not just how you feel today. Trust the process, even when it’s uncomfortable. The bumps in the road don’t define you, how you respond to them does.

Stay patient, stay positive, and remember that greatness isn’t built in a single workout, but over years of persistence, grit, and belief in the bigger picture. Cheers to a 2025 filled with growth and many PRs.
